At about 11:00 GMT, Cleveland Police received information that a woman in Saltburn could have suspicious items on her.
Armed officers, trained negotiators and emergency services attended the scene and are currently speaking to her.
The Army said bomb disposal experts are in attendance, with two crews and a duty officer on standby to help police.
Phil Barnes, an eyewitness who took photos of the armed officers, said a police helicopter was at the scene.
Mr Barnes said: "Police have cleared everyone away so no-one can see what is happening."
Ambulance, fire service, bomb disposal and police attended the scene Graham Pickering of BBC Tees is at Saltburn and said a stretch along the top of the cliff had been sealed off for a distance of several hundred yards, including the pier, to ensure public safety.
Saltburn Bank has been closed to traffic, which could cause congestion problems for Marske Road and the road between Saltburn and Brotton.
Several people who were at business premises in the area have been evacuated

seems strange with a lot of armed police for one woman to me ,but hope it comes out why she is having stand off with police?The Daily Wail is running with this now with the headline of "Portrait of Britain 2012: Armed police train guns on 'veiled woman who claims to have bomb in bag'

Yea but as a woman she would have read the instruction manual on any device, whereas her male counterparts would refuse blankly!
With regard to recovery man... how many police do you think is the correct amount for a reported suicide bomber?

LOL I wont be taking my holidays there then.Strange things go on there in Saltburn, they may not have a suicide bomber, but they do actually have a yarnbomber
