The officer was hit by a Ford Fiesta at 19:15 GMT on Wednesday while he was talking to the driver of a red van on the B2145, in Chichester.
The Fiesta then was in collision with a car travelling in the opposite direction.
The officer remains in hospital suffering from a fractured pelvis.
The driver of the Fiesta, a 30-year-old man, and the driver of the car he collided with, a 23-year-old woman, were taken to hospital but later discharged.
Ch Insp Natalie Moloney, head of road policing unit at Sussex Police, said: "My officer was carrying out a routine patrol when this incident happened.
"He has suffered a hairline fracture to his pelvis, and remains in hospital in a comfortable condition.
"I don't underestimate how much of a shock this would have been for all those involved."
She urged anyone who witnessed the collision to contact police
