Reputation System

I posted a couple of "robust" things recently that quickly garnered negative points, one went down to -3. I was a little miffed. I considered, briefly, posting a "why?" like so many seem to do, but then remembered I hate those posts so I didn't and trusted to the good graces of the other users.
Low and behold as far as I can see all of those posts have now, over the course of a few days returned to 0, which is frankly where they belong. With no cajoling from me, nor any posts from people saying how they were correcting the negative reps and trying to assuage my feelings. I kept posting in the threads to show I was making valid points and this seemed to work.
I've earned my reputation through some funny posts, some serious ones and as far as I know not actually having any negative posts at the moment. I don't think I've ever mentioned my reputation in anything other than a thread about the reputation system. I've certainly not (to my knowledge) made a "you'll probably -1 this" statement in a post.
So long live the reputation system. It works and doesn't have to result in loads of posts about it. Now I've just got to try and catch up with those pesky mods and their incredibly high scores!
PS It appears my 900th point was earned from a post poking fun at the IPCC, which is a nice bonus

Usually, if a post hits -1 you'll know exactly who gave it to you; at least in my case.

Well doneI've just crossed the 900 barrier (don't any of youse -1 this of I'll hunt you down...) and thought I'd share my experiences of the reputation system over the past few days. As a tonic to the number of people moaning about it.
One thing I will say is, you are on 900 and I only have about 100 yet we both have the same level of karma, how does that work!?

It doesn't just go on the rep system.

I know that, but I have less "forum time served" less posts and a lower posts per day rate. Karma realy is a mystery to me!It doesn't just go on the rep system.

It's a mystery to everyone.
I suspect however that you've posted about half the number of posts as CMDkeen, in half the amount of time, roughly. It balances out. Plus, alot of the time it's about quality, not quantity.

No, Just No. OP = FAIL. Not another boring reputation post. Go read your daily Fail.
Or something like that.

I wonder (as I so often do) what Rich would have said about this.

I'm one of those folk who politely ask for an explanation of -1s, but feel daft when other folk give me sympathy votes.

Especially when they're ex-SO19 and have access to firearms

People need to learn to give it time instead of demanding an explanation for a -1.

The rep system also seems to work in the sense that the people with drastically poor reputation scores (-100 or something) are usually the people most in need of a permanent ban for the forum. Generally the ones who stir things up, make inflammatory posts or are generally idiots. It must make it easier for the Mods to spot. Search the worst reputation scores, look at a few of the posts, see they are winding up the forum and hit the ban button!
My reputation was at -32 at one point. Exception that proves the role?

Yep agree, it was quite amusing looking at the list of +er's and -'ers... folks, your moderating team can see exactly who gives reputation points... and it does make us smile sometimesI find it highly amusing that one of the users that has given a
vote to the OP, is usually the one moaning the loudest that the
button should be removed.

This is somewhat amusing - it's also sometimes possible to tell who has hit what button based on the tone of the replies.
