You are off duty and you and your partner have gone out for dinner or to a bar for a few drinks, Surprisingly you bump into one of lifes undesirables, you know him to be a criminal and he knows you to be a police officer, he approaches you and makes a harmlessbut smug comment about your partner, for instance 'beautiful girl you've got there', The content of the comment is not threatening nor is his behavious, However you know him to be a sinister quite sly character and highly suspect the only reason he made the comment was to indirectly threaten you.
What would you do?

Leave the pub with my partner as soon as I saw the individual, and most probably go home with my partner aswell.
Pubs are normally in a tight area (they are where I live anyways). So chances are you could bump into him again after hes had a few more pints, which could result if something different.
So leaving straight away diffuses the situation there and then. Theres not point in risking it.
Be different it i wasnt with my partner at the time though

'Thankyou, its the sort of woman you could get if you can provide security and trust to another human being rather then selfishly think of yourself and fund your narrow minded lifestyle with petty criminality'

That and explain to avoid the person if she ever spots him in the street etc. Just in case.

Were his eyebrows up or down when he made this comment?

If only I was a DCI and it was the 1970s...
I am going to honestly say I don't know what I would do. If I am in an area where I am likely to come across him again and I leave then I have backed down and shown them that they can change my personal life. If I am out of my own area and was in the area on a whim then again I wouldn't back down, would just avoid making dinner plans in that area again.
