Sgt with stick

Was in liverpool today today and seen a sgt with what looked like a huge baton is this the norm when on foot??

Sounds like a level 2 baton.

I recall a few years ago seeing a Sergeant with what I think is called a 'tipstaff' outside Goodison Park.

These are called signalling sticks (and were sometimes erroneously called night-sticks). They were used prior to the invention of radios. On a night duty the Sgt would bang the stick on the kerb to summon the beat Constables for the area he was in. They are still carried today by supervisors as merely an anachronistic harp back to those days

They are also carried on the Isle of Man

They are called signalling sticks and they are issued, or at least used to be, to Special Supervisors. I have mine in my locker and bring it out when I do high vis foot patrol.
