Hi guys,

As the topic says, I've got my assessment next week down at Support HQ, and I would really appreciate any advice or tips to suceed at this first stage! I've been reading and matching the core competences to relevant past events in my life, but do you guys think I should have 2 for each, just in case?

Also, this may sound a bit silly, on my invite letter, it says the assessment will be held in the Osborne Quarters/Blocks, however, looking from Google maps, the directions supplied seem to be a bit confusing. Am I right in thinking that once you've parked up in the student car park, you turn left, up the road towards Osborne Close by a mini roundabout?

Thanks! :D

I had one 'event' for each question in the interview and I passed the assessment. Two 'events' will probably be more beneficial though. It's all about how you talk about them and the depth of which you describe what YOU did, how YOU did it, etc, etc....

In terms of getting to the assessment area (Osbourne Close) you do park in the car park, near the big sports field, then you turn left (on foot now) back onto the road and away from the gym and the rest of Victoria House etc. you go past a barrier, like one from a car park, and continue up the road. There is a junction (could be the mini-roundabout you mentioned) where you turn left. It is signposted (?) and has houses along it. You just follow that round. You'll know that your in the right place because there are lots of little 'houses' on your right as you come through the bushes. When I got there, there was a group of other applicants and a sign saying 'Police Special Constable Assessment' or something like that.

Hey mate,

In regards to having two past events in your life to each competencies, by all means do it! When it comes to your interview you need to make sure that what you say is a strong event tied to that competency, so having the choice between two really ups your chances!

As to the directions to the Osborne Quarters, FidelChazztro summed it up pretty well! Head to the student car park which is next to a big field (It's opposite the gym and has parking spaces, what ever you do, don't park by the gym!). Walk down the road to the left, pass the barrier, turn left at the junction which is sign posted as "Osborne Quarters", walk down this road and follow it round to the right which is where you will come across different blocks. My assessment took place in block D, but this could change. However, just look out for signs that say "Special Constable Assessment" or something along those lines to make sure you get the right building!

Best of luck mate, keep practicing some situational examples and your competencies! Posted Image

Thank you for all the information guys, especially on the details on getting to the Osborne Blocks! I will try and get two examples for each competency, as you say FidelChazztro and HampshireDave, extra may be benefical and indeed up my chances!

Also, may I ask did you all have a chance to talk to other candidates on the day itself? Or is it more of a examination style atmosphere?

No, it's very relaxed. Apart from when you're actually doing the 'tests'. In the waiting rooms and on breaks everybody talks. Just not about the tests themselves or any sensitive information. Everyone was nice and even got a lift to the station, then sat and chatted with a few of the others on the connecting journey back to Southampton Central. So, no need to worry about it.

Brilliant, thanks for the answer FidelChazztro! :aok:

Final thing, are the examiners really friendly and put you at ease? I'm guessing they are! ;)

Yeah, they're all really nice. It definitely didn't feel like an 'interview', at least not to me. They were all really friendly and helpful.

Good luck at the assessment mate, sure you'll be fine!

Also, quick note Chaser.

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK THEM TO REPEAT THE QUESTION!!!!

If you are struggling to answer one of the questions, then ask them to just repeat or rephrase it for you. I did this several times in my assessment and I came out with a pass!

Good luck mate!

Many Thanks Splang and craigtee! Craigtee I was too very pleased at the scores I achieved, especially the written test, I thought I blew my chances with that, but I need not have worried! I am too doing the fitness test on March 22nd, so I'll see you there!
