Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee Medal is to be awarded to qualifying members of the civilian emergency services. This is only right and proper. However, the members of the Voluntary Aid Societies (such as St.John Ambulance, the Red Cross and St.Andrew's Ambulance) are not to be considered for the Medal. They frequently support and work in partnership with the statutory ambulance services facing similar challenges with no remuneration for their services. We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Department of Culture Media and Sport reverse their original decision and award the Diamond Jubilee Medal to qualifying members of the Voluntary Aid Societies listed above.

Please sign to support our Voluntary Aid Societies.

I thought some members of those organisations could get it?

Public servants, including service men and women, as well as volunteers in the community, are likely to be among those chosen to receive this great honour.

Appears to me that people in the above mentioned organisations could still get it, albeit it may not be awarded in the same manner as those in the police for example.

I'm sure people on here have said they previously received the Golden Jubilee Medal for St John's service. I'm guessing the criteria has since changed?

they can get it

"emergency services personnel who have been in paid service, retained or in a voluntary capacity, who have to face the prospect of dealing with emergencies as part of their conditions of service, and have completed five full calendar years of service on 6 February 2012"

they make no mention of them having to be public funded.

My ambo service are eligible for it but none of us have more than 5 years service yet.

Hi all,

Just a quick question in relation to the jubilee medal, (apologies if I've put it in wrong section!) -
I joined the specials in 2004, then resigned in jan 2009 due to starting in the regs on 2nd feb 2009.
There was about a two week break between Sc's and regs.
Can anyone confirm or not if that means I qualify for the 5 years service as there was a small gap in between.

Thanks,

Andy

No one got the QGJM for SJA service.

part of the problem is that even if the award was granted the VASes would have to purchase the medals etc.

interesting to note that only the Ambulance service will be getting it in the NHS.

also OSJ awards and the OSJ service medal are technically 'private' awards rather than state awards, although they can be worn military and 999 service uniforms.

Yes, this is known as aggregated service

Aggregated service will be taken into account. Police officers, who have less than five years' service with their force, may have previously served as a special constable, PCSO, a member of the armed forces or as a member of another eligible emergency service. Providing the officer is in service on 6 February 2012, and their aggregated service amounted to more than five years, then they will be eligible for the medal. The officer would, however, need to apply for the medal, and would be invited by their force to provide proof of their previous service. Service as a police cadet will not count as aggregated service.

I feel that St John Ambulance members should get this medal for their community service.
