Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum after passing the sifting stage of recruitment. Very interesting site. I'm trying to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible ready for interview. From what I can make out, SC's choose when they work but I was wondering if there are set start / finish times etc.

Do they ever ask you to work at specific times?

Good luck with your interview.

This varies greatly from force to force to be honest. I'm not sure what the situation is in West Yorkshire, but in my force we start and finish when we like.

As times are getting tighter we are getting asked more and more to cover specific events or shifts though. For instance we were all called during the summer riots, and the more experienced officers are asked to come in if there are too few lates/nights officers. This is entirely at your discretion though, at the end of the day it doesn't pay the mortgage or look after the kids so if I can help out then I will but that is not always the case.

As above, come in and start at anytime. However I was recommended to come in at briefing times, as this will make sure I was teamed up with someone. Finishing times vary as you may get stuck on a job etc...

Hello!

Good luck with the interview, if you need any advice don't be afraid to ask!!

The Working hours in West Yorkshire Police is what ever you fancy working at that point, however things like Events etc are set hours.

We use a program in which you book hours remotely from home/mobile.

However if you get on with certain Officers you can simply work there shift pattern.

Hope this helps :ermm:

Thanks very much for the replies.

Leading on from what has been said......

Say for instance I find out at short notice that I have a spare morning / afternoon and I show up for work. I've missed the briefing and not got paired up with anyone, what are the work limitations as a result?

You aren't supposed to just turn up as the sgt wot be expecting you.

You would normally contact the SSO that sorts out your duties they will then make the sgt aware you are coming in to work.

I'm from NEL WYP That's how we do ours. But you are supposed to book a week in advanced on a system called duty sheet

Yeah ditto above, you can't just turn up really!

We also have Dutysheet or we can email through our duty. Alternatively I would imagine if you called through they wouldn't turn down a duty from you.

Even if you miss briefing they would still pair you up, somebody would come and collect to take you out.

They always find something for you to do :)

Minimum of 24 hours notice required at GA before duty, not 7 days as stated above.

Hi,

As an ex WYP Special, people are right, you need to pre-arrange the times when you come on duty. It may as you put the hours in you will get to know the shifts you work alongside and then arrange through them and SSO/SO when you parade for duty.

One thing to be mindful of is your own health, excitment and the great feeling of working in the police is a great thing and as a regular I really apreciate the help from all the specials that parade.....but you still need to have that home/work balance and time to yourself. If you have a 'day' job then when you sign the duty sheets you will be signing that you understand the terms of the EU Working time directive and that by signing you may go over those hours etc etc etc etc. **please someone correct me if i am wrong on this part**

But the main thing is......HAVE FUN. You will love every second of being a Special Constable. I certianly did.
Where are you looking at being based...????

Well, I live in Castleford so ideally would like Pontefract. Wakefield or Leeds would be an option. Anyone know if there is a requirement for more at Ponty?

I'll certainly join all those of you who frequent Mcdonalds at Glasshoughton first thing in the morning. (It's like a cop shop there at 5am!!)

I' am a Ponte Special but unsure whether they are requiring any more specials. When you get the opportunity to choose the nick you work out of by all mean try ponte. If you want any more info feel free to ask.

Also at Ponte we usually frequent KFC.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad I've found a local special. Do you live in the Ponty / Cas area then?

What's a typical duty for a Ponty special (barring a trip to KFC!)

I've recently found out that my assessment won't be until April at least. They said in the next financial year so assuming that it's April forwards.

Without giving to much away a typical shift can be from Public Order on the town centre to doing different operations. It gives you the best of both worlds from Saturday Night policing to day time investigating of crime. Good luck in your assessments. Once you have those out of the way it could be a little over 6 months for when you start training. I was attested about a year after I had my assessment centre.
