Is there any national PCSO uniform?

I notice the PCSOs on Brighton Beach patrol wear caps with the chequered bands, and have patches with the word POLICE in large letters and COMMUNITY SUPPORT OFFICER in far smaller letters.

Nope. There's not a national police uniform either.

There is, it's called the National Police Uniform, some forces just don't use it, kind of negating the point.

I was more curious about how some forces such as the Met uniform their PCSOs in such a way as there is no doubt who they are, with distinctive cap bands and badges and community support in big letters, where as some like Brighton wear a police constable style hat and have POLICE in big letters.

Sussex PCSO hats have light blue chequer bands which match their epaulettes. The badging varies; some have the wording in the same sized font, others have 'POLICE' in a larger font.

Devon and Cornwall changed their PCSO uniform because it was too confusing :

I think other forces such as Sussex should follow suit.

I think it's mostly down to cost of uniform. It's far cheaper to keep the same kit as a PC and put new badges on then fun blue shirts and different jackets etc. the Met give PCSO's big blue coats, different hats and shirts which probably costs a fair amount.

We get the same clothing as a Constable, only difference being the colour of our wicker tops, fleece, hatband and badges.

We have blue wicking shirts instead of black, we have blue bands on our hats (or red for PSOs) and we wear hi viz armour instead of black. We have blue epaulettes that say PCSO on them instead of a number and all our clothing has Police Community Support Officer on it front and back. Probably the main thing the public notice is the hi viz though.

People still mistake me for a police officer though....! :w00t:

No collar number on epps? Kind of defeats the object don't you think?

Well I suppose the idea is that you become so well known on your patch that people know you by name rather than by your number. Whilst your force may think of you only as a number, you don't want the public too. If anyone wanted to make a complaint about me, they would probably know my name or they could look my number up on the force website as there is a hideous photo of me on there. Or they could just say the female PCSO as my PCSO colleague is male. But people get confused and think I'm Katie - the NSO... :(

Originally, when the MET paraded PCSOs about ten years ago they had chequered caps. The Commissioner rocked up to the press event and was not best pleased and ordered that they should never wear them.

In reality, MET PCSOs look terrible with their off white / bluey shirts and ill-fitting uniforms. They shouldn't look like police officers, but they need to look respectable.

Interesting, some councils deploy their own 'officers' on the streets. I had to double take at one like this in Nottingham who clearly looks like police:

I believe UNISON have been asking for a national standard PCSO uniform for quite a few years now.

There isn't, but I thought they were thinking of bringing one in?

Gee! The CPOs in the link you post even have volunteer CPOs,
Why would someone want to do that job for free,

<There are 100 CPOs in Nottingham and a further 20 volunteer CPOS, known as Auxiliary CPOS, who work 15 hours a week unpaid>
