Strathclyde have bought a small number of Focus 1.8-115TDCi estates for the intermediate / response category, but as these are end of line previous model ones they probably got them at a keen price and may not be what they get next. This decision to go with Vauxhall was made before the announcement of the single Scottish force but its the start of nationalisation, identical Astras from Gretna to John O Groats!!

West Mids are getting insignias so this may be the way it goes for us. Hopefully as our basic response vehicle.
Edit for spelling
From what I've heard there going back to a Area car type arrangment first so there will probly end up going to the Taser crews first and as they break make there way down to us

Supposedly! They were ordered months ago but they haven't arrived yet even though they were supposedly in stock and ready to go. Should be good when they do turn up though - far more practical then the Volvos (as you can turn them around in less than 25 manoeuvres to go after people) and obviously a lot more comfortable and quick than the Fords.

Comfy isn't a word i would use
BMW are shocking with their time scales, Volvo would have a new car with you In a month and a courtesy car to keep you going, BMW you join the queue with everyone else

If the new astras have a bull horn like the insignias, i'm happy!!
Maybe direct the bullhorn backwards and you might get a bit more acceleration...

I cannot understand this insistance on having the small engined models, there is no difference in the speed once going, but there are potential safety issues in slow overtakes etc. Most people themselves have bigger engines than 1.3 just for practicality (even my elderly neighbour stumped up for 1.7l diesel), let alone lugging two fully kitted officers plus road safety equipent plus their own kit bags..
Just look at the US all their vehicles are specially built with the space and ability to cope with any situation. Granted we don't need yank tanks but reasonable sized and powered vehicles should be available.

New shape astras have no space in the back (even less than last shape), which will make it even harder transporting prisoners. Insignia are detested by the RPU as they are so unreliable, think there is a move to Volvo which they are happy about.

Let's be honest, we're a bit of a laughing stock compared to the US when it comes to equipment. I mean, they have the new Ford Interceptor, a specially made police car, the base model having 260-odd bhp (as opposed to 1.7 Astras with less than half that) and top end models having 365-hp twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engines.
The popular Crown Victoria as used all over the US has a massive V8 engine. And it's the norm for US police cars to have cages in the back.
A 1.3 diesel Astra as a police car is a joke.

It's just a shame the American's don't have the great driver training we have over here to drive them.

How many miles does it have on it? When we had our Insignia (before it was crashed), it was a brand new '60 plate one!!!
Lol, sloppy seconds!
You say that...as our insignia got written off....our 'new' area car is Hatfields old one with 150,000 miles on!!

Except it's not about the looks!
The use of small engined vehicles is a money thing - fuel is a big cost even at the rates we get it for in our own station pumps.
Vauxhall will have won by being cheapest on initial purchase price, fuel consumption rates and long warranty to off set repair costs, i.e. the bottom line, as oppose to practicalities.

The new ones do not. No doubt they will be sent to RTCs though.
