I notice that there is current advertising for civilian Financial Investigators and I think there was a recent campaign for civilian "Assistant Investigators", both posts involving pretty sharp end stuff like interviewing suspects. If these roles can be done by staff who aren't police officers, why are there police officers still employed in mundane roles like property/evidence stores, custody, etc etc.? Seems a strange place to start civilianising - at the front of house rather than the back room staff -

I know of some HO forces in England who have Investagtive Officers, civilians who interview suspects and investigate serious offences such as Rapes and murders / suspicious deaths; and get paid well to do so!

yet some officers are in areas such as Duty Planning and back office jobs such as statistic taking

My understanding is that civilian investigators won't really be doing any investigating. They'll be doing all the donkey work considered too menial for detectives like conducting house to house enquiries and most likely recording statements from halfwits!

A decent wage on top of their pension and patten pay off.......that'll do nicely! Although when I retire i'll be on a cruise ship or trying to sneak into the playboy mansion, not skulking about a police station!

It's the same old chestnuts - blokes not being able to walk away when they have retired, and wanting to keep the right people in the right jobs. No insult intended but they know exactly who they want in these jobs, and they are the ones who will get them.
Same as the recruitment campaign the Service ran on the mainland, for officers experienced in various specialist roles, due to too many 'homegrown' officers having been allowed to leave under Patten.
Lot of other agendas being followed with this whole process.

Dredd, you have the right idea...better than drinking your way through it like some undoubtedly are.

I think when they retire they should step aside and give other people a chance.

Oh, they already do - thing is, these 'other people' are other retired police officers.
