is this just checking your background ?
Also your close relatives, your address, your financial situation and any other factors likely to affect your ability to conduct yourself as a police officer.

In a way, yes, that's exactly what it is. Because of the information you will have access to and the powers that you have, the Police have a responsibility to:
1) make sure you have told the truth on your application form about who you are, where you are from, your employment history, etc
2) ensure that you are a person of good character and that you aren't a criminal / terrorist, don't live with or associate with criminals / terrorists and are generally trustworthy - well, as far as vetting can tell
3) you aren't likely to be able to be bribed by criminals/terrorists because of possible links with them, bad debts, etc

I wouldn't worry about £400. You're allowed "normal" debts, just try not to let them get to a level when you have problems or then the police will worry. Avoid getting warning letters, missed payments, court cases, etc.
Family is always a tricky thing. How any of their actions will affect your application depends on many things - if you live with them now, how serious it was at the time, how long ago it was, was it a one off or a series of many things. My best advice - find out as much as possible about your family and especially the people you live with and all of their involvement with the police. When you fill in the forms, answer all the questions honestly and provide as much detail as possible about things like your dad's assault case - let me stress, if you lie or "forget" to put something on there, they WILL find out and your application will be binned straight away. Being honest is the only way to pass vetting. I wouldn't worry too much about your dad at this stage though.

ok i get you
but i do live with him now there wasnt anything on my application form to say if he had been involved in anything, but i shall be 100% honest if they ask me anything. Also my last job i left was asda and i didnt hand in a letter of leave i just left i feel this my come back and haunt me when they ring asda up but my time i was there i was always bubbly and wasnt in any trouble.
Yeah, these sort of questions will come later on... if you pass the earlier stages you can look forward to spending many hours filling in forms. Great practice for police work!
