I have been told that the new batch of Specials have been issued with certain digit numbers - I can't believe they have run out of other certain digit numbers, we haven't got THAT many officers!!

Don't they re-issue defunct numbers any more??

The last intake ran into the 2980's range so it is possible they have run out of numbers.

Considering the call signs it makes sense that specials are X*** but it does seem strange that they will not make us all the same.

Nope, they decided a few years ago not to re-issue numbers. starting at 9000 was Norfolk's idea

Specials in Hampshire have their collar numbers starting with a certain number. It wouldn't surprise me if sometime in the future there was a national move towards similar collar numbers for SCs? I suppose it's good for identification purposes as to who's a PC or SC.

Apparently we are going to have a merged name, it's going to be the first part of Norfolk, and the last part of Suffolk...

Norfolk Specials all currently have X*** numbers. I found this out while working with them in Essex last weekend. I was told the new Suffolk intake all have X numbers but maybe I have been miss led.

And when an officer retires/resigns their number goes with them. I reckon giving them X numbers makes sense as it will be a new start from X000 and we will share the numbers with Norfolk so when we become NorSuff Police they won't have issue's with double numbers. My idea was that when we ran out of X*** numbers why didn't we just go to a 5 number eppaulette like essex or the met? Then they could keep all the X's.

They are definately X's but with Suffolk and Norfolk "collaborating" in so many areas and morphing into one you would have thought a common approach may have made sense. I wonder if it was discussed in the higher atmosphere of change meetings.

Previous posters mention A common approach nationally would make sense but just having done a course with officers from 7 other forces, and basically nearly all our rank structures and titles were different and numbering and uniform were different in lots of respects i will not hold my breath for a standard specials constabulary country wide. The Cultural web we weave!

Well it would make sense that both Norfolk and Suffolk will be sharing Special's numbers from now on, since it's Norfolk HR that deals with all our Specials Recruitment. I'm looking forward to seeing what a SuffNor Police badge would look like, maybe we should all come up with some designs.

If we are going to be sharing with Norfolk, shouldn't the badge have a tractor somewhere on it ??

Oh and I think Anglian Constabulary might be more accurate Posted Image

Clearly yes you do.

I don't like the name though, 'Anglian' doesn't have a ring to it.

Never going to happen, not all the time there is the Regular/Special divide

Take the Army - (the Regular/TA divide has been broken down) a Sgt is a Sgt is a Sgt, and regulars will refer to a TA Sgt as Sgt - never going to happen in the Specials

Not until Specials training/competency is sorted out. TA soldiers are trained to an equivalent level as their Regular counterparts. So should Specials (and then be paid accordingly) .......just my opinion

You cannot viably have a SC trained to the level as a reg Sgt... that would just take too long. Incidentally Gav do you have any Ospre test papers? That might be a fun game to play...

I can;t see why the ep number should matter. They mix them up in other forces, Specials just have the old SC and crown

Some other forces do not even use the SC and/or the crown and just have numbers..But then others have names and the words special constable embroided on shirt front panels and some i saw on a course recently on the shirt sleeves.
There are quite a few differences across the country.
I cannot think of two many reasons why numbers actually make much of a difference nowdays other than databasing maybe.
On the street and radio it does not seem to make any difference or advantage either way.
