Just curious...If you pass your exams, but there's no vacancy for a Sergeant, what happens? You're called a sergeant but keep the same pay? Or something else?
No you pass part 1 and then have to take part 2.
If there are no vacancies then if an opportunity comes up you might be asked to "Act Up" so will take in a Sgt role, but still be on your PC pay.
Or if there are no posts, and no option to act you up stay as a PC until there is.

But you don't have to retake your Sgt's exams? Sound's worth it.

Does anyone else have to do a pre part 1 exam? or is it just my force?

You can take your part I whilst you're still in your probation but you must be out of your probation by the November of that year (can't remember the exact date).

I'm going to do it! - I wasn't going to but changed my mind after having basically been told to by lots of people....
Yes it definitely worth doing... and if I know you Ben "Mr. Legal Dictionary" you will blitz it!!
Only issue I am finding now (having passed it this year) is trying to decide whether to put myself in a position that will perhaps help an earlier promotion (as in gaining evidence) or stick with what I know and do other things I want first.
By the way I will have the 2011 Blackstones books and 2011 Blackstone Q&A's for sale if anyone wants them - PM me... the 2012 equivalent will cost over £100. I reverted to using the Tom Barron Crammers plus CD's and I did a Checkmate 3 day course. I am not a big reader so the mass of information in Blackstones was just too much for me to take in.
If you read alot... just get stuck into Blackstones... if not then I would suggest you look for Police Pass... I found their CD's very good and I would go for their books rather than Tom Barrons and do their three day course if I was taking the test again. A colleague used just the Janes Crammer book... reading it for just two weeks and he managed to pass.

I have a reputation to live up to!

You get paid Sgts pay for the hours you do acting up
I was considering going in for it, I have been told I can do part 1 during probation but obviously have to wait till end of probation before acting up or going for part 2 etc.

No I didn't have to do one but if you score a very low score (can't remmeber the percentage) you get hauled in front of the Inspector to explain why you haven't put any study in.

I'd recommend doing it as early as possible if you have even the slightest thought of promotion in the future, if you're only just out of probation you will probably adapt more easily to the world of OSPRE where the answer is often not what would happen in the real world!

Was that a force thing? I read our SOP on it at work the other night, they said that we have to do a pre exam exam and if we pass it they will then put us in for the main one but if we fail, then we can decide if we wish to still do it and then pay for it ourselves and if its a pass the money will be refunded

Yeah I think it is a force thing as we don't have a pre-exam I guess it's just there to make sure people don't put in for it who have no intention of studying and thereby wasting money for the force.

The best thing I found by far was the Blackstones online Q&A, well worth the money.

Has anything come out on AWARE yet (for those of us in the Met). I've been off work for over three weeks so won't have seen anything recently...

My advice - do it. The study and law/procedure you will learn as a result will make you a better PC regardless.
I have got my Part 2 at the end of October this year, getting close now

Wow, I was in the same position this time last year and it has gone so quickly.

As I am Met, there has been no further word about the next stage for us... or whether it will continue using the Towbar method. I am seriously thinking of getting myself on an SNT or something to gain some evidence and also act up... I am getting no evidence working on a response team.
