[Stone Cold]

I put an application in for a ride out quite a while ago but haven't heard anything since? I know that Sally was also looking into it for me but wondered if they were still on going or have they been cut back?

Going on from there has anyone done one recently? If I get the chance to go, are you provided with anything, do you have to sit there and not get involved or say anything should anything occur? Should you take anything with you?

Being in Shepton Mallet, the local nick is closed so its not as though I could just pop in at anytime, to ask.

I think it would be great to get on one just as a taster for whats involved and what to expect.

Any comments would be appreciated.

When i went on my first one i was provided with a set of Body Armour (It was out of Trinity Road ^^) but this time im just brining my own along without the 'Police' markings >.<

all you will need to bring is a Form of ID, a little packed lunch and a sense of Humor

With the getting involved, they will tell you to stay in the Car if its something Serious, if not then you can watch to yours hearts content, the only time i actually got involved was during a Domestic, the two officers had entered the house looking for an Assalant and i stayed outside with the Victom to comfort her. At the end of the day, your not there to be an extra police officer, but you are still human

It sounds really very interesting and beneficial...let me know how the next goes on the 16th!

Do you do the one stint and then ask them for another or do you have to keep applying for each ride out?

I guess I'll just have to keep pestering!

It must be that there is not much to do out here in the sticks, so I guess there is not as much call for the same amount of responses as the city!

However I could find myself eating my words!!

When i did the 6 down in WSM station, i just applied once and spoke to Insp. Jury who organised it all for me and i didn't re-apply just kept asking if i could go back and do another on different shift times and days
They are really beneficial as it gives you that insight into the police that you just wouldn't get unless you were on the recieving end of the law, but even then you still wouldn't see it all!

I'd recommend anyone who's considering a career within the Police to sign up for these ride along schemes because they are quite frankly brilliant!

The ride alongs give you a hugh advantage, the last one I went out on, we picked up a misper on the s136 (mental helth) I turned around and it was a old school friend, I went very quiet! He still lives very close to my mum and dad, and I even had to go to his house and try to not be recognised, but very fun all the same!As for getting involved if the situation calls for it the officer can ask you for help if you refuse Im sure it is againts the law.

Im sure i read in blackstones something along the lines of it is an offence not to help a police officer if he request your help.....it may have been an old book!

I suppose it will depend on the situation, most normal people would be happy to help but there are always a few which are anti police who aren't interested.

I have just looked on the A&S ride along page on the website and seen a very cheesy video from about 2 or 3 years ago staring two members of my response team. one has left to join TSG but the other one is still with us, wait till I see him next!

I know that video. One word of advise to the guys going on their first obs shift, when they hit 999 and go screaming off hold on to your hats and keep looking forward , I bottled it and look at the back of the seat the first time!!

A Police Constable can Demand help from a member of the public and it is an offence if they refuse assistance unless they can prove they feared for their lives, while aiding a Police constable a member of the public also has added protection under the law. Basically, if you help an officer when they ask and you get hurt in the process, the offence is the same as Assaulting an Officer

Well I can't find the answer on the internet however, my specials training group were advised by a district training officer that a MOP is under no obligation to help a Police officer.

Had my first ridealong this morning and absolutely loved it. It's reconfirmed how much I want to do this, and even though it was fairly quiet we did manage to speak to a lot of locals in garages etc. going round the whole of North-J district.

Had one blue light run the second I set foot in the car, makes you realise/think differently when you're in the passenger seat how stupid/idiotic some drivers are. Had the typical driver overtaking another car not realising we were behind..

Two people I was with were superb, and it's just making me want to start training even more now, absolutely loved it!

One very important word of advice though is, never ever say the Q word! Because you can guarantee that when you do, a whole entire s**t heap of jobs will kick off at once..
