We are not talking about when they open recruitment again. We are talking about when they give the 1000 or so people already through the process a start date.

The second largest force in the country and they can't afford to recruit volunteers, something doesn't add up. The next force up (The Met...) is accepting anybody and everybody as specials, training them and yet still have money to spare*! I'm ridiculously anti-savage-public-sector-cuts (whilst I accept savings must be made, the cuts are too deep and happening too fast!) but I can't help but feeling something has gone wrong if they can't afford free workers (I am accounting for the costs of training too, but i can't be *that* high...
*The Met has three point six times the officer numbers as West Midlands Police YET seven and a half times the budget! I factor in various events and the area is *slightly* larger than the West Mids force area, but it's still mad...

Am I the only person who thinks the state of recruitment is awful.

Ive always thought WMP should have more money, we have the 2nd largest city (Birmingham), the 9th largest (Coventry), loads of football teams etc.

They operate in budget, that's the issue.
So funding per anum gets slashed by 10-15%

What about the 300 people or so waiting to become specials, when do they start? April 2012?
For some reason the date March 2012 is in my head, i'm sure it was mentioned at the last meeting I attended, but I could very well be wrong.

Whilst it highlights maybe numbers should not be cut those in charge still fail to see the issues with cutting back the numbers. They seem to think that it wont matter.
Its all about the money money money, its all about the money money money... as the song goes.

Those in charge, I hope you mean Central Government, I don't think for one minute Chris Sims wants to cut any numbers....

Do you think that with the riots it will influence there decision to put more officers through training?
I think locally it might i think it might be the same in every force! but i dont think those in charge at the top wil change their mind, infact they are saying as much every day almost!
We got by this time, intially the Specials went in on mass across the force area and then our reg colleagues were called back from rest days on the Wednesday and 12 hour shifts implemented! sure more officers would have been lovely but i dont think anyone is listening!

He'll do what he's told to do!
You are also aware that he ruined Staffs before coming to WMP?

Not aware o f any changes mate that will have opened up any branch of recruitment. They are struggling to run courses internally let alone bringing new officers through!
Courses are there - just not being communicated down to us...

Yep, I think I knew what you meant; I was referring to PST courses - there are two a month for specials at the moment, and there is also the option of doing them with the regulars if you have the time...

I was having a discussion about this recently, as we all do lol.
It would take at least 6 months to get new bobbies out on the street if they announced recruitment tomorrow! Possibly longer if they scrap every1 and start again.
So imagine this new financial year April 2012 they announce recruitment, chances are officers wont be ready until 2013.
I know there still getting rid of people surely there gonna need people before 2015!!

This is thing though, people have still got the mindset that we need to replace officers, but at the end of the day numbers are being reduced so you aren't actually replacing them. The plan is to lose 1000 officers in the next four years. Do the maths there and you won't be seeing any recruitment just a staggered reduction.
