Saw a Surrey PCSO the other day with a white hat. What is he?

Could they be in your Traffic Department??


I know in my Force we have some PCSOs permanantly attached with traffic but I'm unsure whether they have the yellow hat cover (as Traffic in my force wear hi-vis yellow hat covers)

It's a 'Roads Policing Community Support Officer'. They used to be based with the RPU department but now they're part of the Safer neighbourhood teams, although they still do the traffic type role. They've been discussed on here in the past I'm pretty sure.

I just typed into google images "Roads Policing Community Support Officer surrey" and saw a picture with someone with a "police support badge." I know that this is a bit off topic, but is police support the same thing as a PCSO?

Oh I see. Yes I thought they where something to do with traffic as traffic cops usually have white hats. I did see him directing traffic once. Thanks!

Police Support is slightly different. I had a PSO (Police Support Officer) come to my house to take a statement. The PSO's as far as I am aware are not attached to a neighbourhood and are in fact there for assistance (although they have no arrest powers etc) They usually drive the vans for prisoners as far as I'm aware

PSOs are aligned to response teams in Surrey - they do statement taking, scene guards, etc. The one in the picture above is in london, so I can only assume it's just a normal PCSO as they don't have PSOs there as far as I'm aware.

RPCSOs, PSOs etc are still PSCOs, just with a slightly different remit and different name. They are accredited with relevant powers depending in their role (for example the RPCSOs obviously have the 'traffic' powers)

The one on the right is a PCSO, however, those were the first PCSOs, ISTR. They had traffic warden epaulettes to but a blue square badge sewn on, see if I can find a better pic of what I mean. Basically when they were trialled the forces had to sort of make the uniform up from existing stock;

Re: Police Support in the Met, those jackets are used by all sorts who work for the Met in uniform and on the street but aren't Constables. Examples are PCSOs, Police employed Security (houses of parliament etc), and even the stable grooms exercising police horses in public.

And cadets! I wore one at the HC flower how a few years ago as a police cadet
