Been to Florida?

I am trying to arrange a family holiday to florida in the first half of next year, I know it is a very popular place to go so I thought I would ask for inspiration from anyone who has been or is going!
At the moment we are looking at about 10 adults and no children going. Im thinking around easter time ish (but not when the schools are out as I know they put the prices up then)
I am hoping to get a large apartment/villa we can all stay in together and probably visit some but not all of the theme parks.
Any advice on when to go, where to stay, who to (or not to) fly with, what to see when we are there or anything else will be greatly appreciated
cheers
Gelf
Mods - I think this is the best place for the post as the marketplace is more for buying and selling but please feel free to move it.

I assume you'll be doing a fly drive style holiday so flying into Sanford or Orlando would be fine for that. Getting a villa shouldn't be a problem but try and get one with a pool or pool within the villa complex as it is nice to have a swim.
Passes to the theme parks are pretty expensive and you now can't keep any extra days on the pass like you used to be able to. So with good planning you should be able to save yourself, main places are Disney world, sea world, universal studios and busch gardens.
Not sure on the current exchange rate but clothing always was cheaper over there so I used to always leave room in my case to buy some new clothes and also trainers (loads of big Nike stores over there)!
Oh lastly enjoy your holiday!

I preferred the non-Disney parks as they are more adult-orientated eg Island Gardens, Universal Studios, but all of them were great.
I loved it!

Some family members have recommended staying in Kissemee, we have got a couple of quotes back for villas and your looking at around $500 per week for a villa with private pool etc. It will also sleep upto 10 people.
I'll try and dig out the website.

Have fun on your holiday though. Got any room in your suitcase for a little one?
Also, from a friend who went a few years ago..
If you want to get cheap(er) or sometimes even free tickets to the theme parks, look out for people offering time share deals, and see what they're offering before you say no. Sometimes it will mean sitting through their 'presentation' for an hour or so, but you might end up with cheap or even free Disney passes at the end of it. So may or may not be worth your time.
I've also been told (I'm sure Steve Collins can either confirm or debunk this) that if you're driving, don't be tempted to flash your headlights (at night) at anyone who's driving without any headlights on. It could (I'm told) be gang related, and anyone who flashes their lights at them, may become their next target (for their "entertainment"). How true that is I've no idea.
If you like Chinese food, try to get to Bill Wong's, if that's even still there. Apparently, you'll have a job to beat it for value.

More than likely we will be renting a car i think, I will certanly be looking for a villa with a pool but im not sure on the agreed budget yet so we will have to see!I assume you'll be doing a fly drive style holiday so flying into Sanford or Orlando would be fine for that. I was told a while ago that there was some way of trading with people who were going home but still had a day or so left on their theme park pass to buy their ticket for cheap, are you saying that is stopped now?
Virgin has been recomended to me by a few people, what was the leg room like? i am quite tall and often have to pay extra for the leg room when I go on short haul flights, im guessing it is a little better on longer flights?I went to Florida a few years ago. Flew with Virgin Atlantic, who were as good as any other long-haul company I've flown with. We stayed in an apartmet block in Kissimee (unsure on speeeeeeling) which was quite well placed for getting to the various parks and was only an hour or so drive down to... I think it was Tampa Bay and you can get to the space centre too.
Did you go the the space centre? is it kennedy space centre im thinking of? was it any good?, i dont know if i want to go there or not realy.
$500 for a week? thats not bad at all!! i take it by "up to 10 people" they mean probably 6 beds and some people have to sleep on a sofa bed or two? Some family members have recommended staying in Kissemee, we have got a couple of quotes back for villas and your looking at around $500 per week for a villa with private pool etc. It will also sleep upto 10 people.

ahh, the old time share ticket give away! i have done that a few times on holidays, i like your style! If you want to get cheap(er) or sometimes even free tickets to the theme parks, look out for people offering time share deals, and see what they're offering before you say no. I will be googling Bill Wong's before i go, thank you
Thanks for the great advice so far guys (and Damsel), keep it comming!!

In the past your pass was for life, so if you purchased a 14 day pass you could use and extra days the next time you visited (even if it was years down the line). I believe now however the days have to be used within X ammount of days of the pass being first used, so you could still buy cheap leftover days from people going home. Found the below on disneys website.More than likely we will be renting a car i think, I will certanly be looking for a villa with a pool but im not sure on the agreed budget yet so we will have to see!

Disney's 14-Day Ultimate Tickets expire 14 days from first day of use; 21-Day Ultimate Tickets expire 21 days from first day of use.

Fair enough then.
Gelf, PM Davies2201 as well. I think his family had a villa of their own in Florida (Kissimmee I think). I've no idea how many people it slept, or if he/they still have it though. But worth a shot.

I did say I had no idea if it was true or not though (in my defence).

Yup, I was just pointing it out as you had added so many caveats to your first post!

I'm F600 and the leg room was fine from what I remember; long haul on 747s and the like are much more comfortable than ryanair cattle class on a 737 :-) I still got up to walk around a bit as sitting down even with plenty of legroom is tiring I find, but it wasn't uncomfortable immediately like you get on smaller planes.
I didn't go to the space centre (think it's Kkennedy, but I'm also thinking Cape Canaveral [sp]), which I'm still gutted about to this day! It's a long way away from all the other touristy areas.
I've got a journal/book thing at home my ex made for me on the trip, I'll try and dig out some details over the weekend and post here.

I've lived in the Tampa Bay area now for 11 years, don't know much about flights as I always fly Tampa Gatwick direct on BA. If you are considering Orlando area I know Britannia fly into Sanford and Virgin into Orlando Int'l. Britannia has an upgrade with extra leg room I believe and Virgin has the same with something like Economy plus. Sanford is much quicker to get out of and the car rental is just outside the concourse, it is about 26 miles north of Orlando.
Markdn (a poster here in the Surrey forum has a villa in that area for rent, check out his profile). Orlando is great for the theme parks but if you want something different many peeps do a 2 centre holiday 1 week Orlando then 1 week to relax in Clearwater Beach or St. Pete beach, the ocean and beaches are spectacular. It is about a 90 minute drive from Orlando by Interstate so not too sad.
If there's any thing specific you want to know let me know and I'll see if I can help (have you considered a ride-along?) At the moment the exchange rate is in the favour of the UK pound so if you have any spare buy dollars!
Best,
Steve

And the beach I was thinking of was as Steve mentioned, Clearwater. Spectacular is definitely the word! Drive wasn't too bad from Orlando on the Interstate, although when I went we hit a continuous piece of roadworks 45 miles long....

The authorities have tried to stamp out the ticketing companies selling part used tickets in Kissimmee (i think) where it's illegal (there are still booths selling them on I-Drive, which is outside of Kissimmee city limits). There are still companies around that do sell them though. It's embarrassing when they don't work at the gate though...!I was told a while ago that there was some way of trading with people who were going home but still had a day or so left on their theme park pass to buy their ticket for cheap, are you saying that is stopped now?

He's part of that Visit Florida website. They promote and specialise in travel to Florida, great to know for family holidays as he has loads of contacts and gets excellent rates (we stayed in a 5 star apartment for 1 week and it cost us £250 for a massive 2 bed place, with living room, kitchen etc etc)

Sorry, F600 is six foot zero inches tall.

I am a brit living in Clearwater FL.
Its a popular beach, bit touristy, Honeymoon Island, St. Pete Beach, are all close by and equally good.
We are about 90 mins from Orlando.
An important point to note is Florida is about 70% the size of England, so its a very big place.
Miami from Orlando is about 4.5 hours, the keys is even further away.
Americans drive everywhere so there are motorways that link everything, but some are 55 mph, others 70mph
But they wont think anything of driving 5 hours !

International Drive (I-Drive) is up near Universal, the Hard Rock Cafe and Hotel and the Portofino Bay Hotel, and used to be the big centre for Brits with about a mile of chain motels and hotels, and adjoining restaurants and attractions. It has faded a bit in recent years but as an option to a villa there are some good apartment complexes that might provide equal levels of accomodation including self-catering, which is essential to avoid spending loads of dosh on continually eating out. There are several dinner shows like 'Sleuths' nearby which provide a good evening's entertainment.
South of Sand Lake Road (which bisects I-Drive) there are a lot of better-class hotels (Peabody's) that serve the Convention Centre. There are also good restaurants and attractions like the helicopter ride and a racing car museum and a very large mall.
Going further south on I-Drive toward Seaworld - a very good attraction - the hotels thin out but this can be a good location close to most parks and attractions. Accordingly due to location the prices can be more affordable.
Continuing south toward the Buena Vista area which is closer to Disney, and Highway 17-92 which runs east-west and has the largest number of hotels and attractions on it. The east end is Disney and Kissimmee,
and the west end of the highway is St Cloud, a small town that has a very good farmer's market on Friday and Saturday. Bit like an indoor car boot.
Back toward KIssimmee passing the big Orange (they sell oranges), Capone's and Medieval Times (dinner shows), and the Air Museum (a favourite of mine) and then down to Old Town, which is laid out like an old western town with lots of shops and a fairground at the back. The big attraction here is the car show on Friday night, really good.
Near here is the town of Celebration, built by Disney to represent the 'perfect place to live'. go and have a look, it has its own police, hospital, all facilities and everything is perfect. Freaks me out, to be honest.
Passing under I-4 we are nearing Disney and the most recently built areas which are more popular with Brits, so there is plenty to see and do. This area is where many of the villas are located - privately owned but managed by travel companies. With the recession many owners were trying to sell up and the year we stayed there there were not many people in the street other than owners taking a vacation themselves. The best way is to get the location address of the villa being offered and check it out on Google Earth for surroundings and condition. Might not be up to date but it'll give you something to judge it by.
As mentioned get one that has a pool and at least four bedrooms, a living room and full facilities. There is a site office where you you check in when you arrive and after getting an impression of a credit card (to cover damages) they will give you the location map and keys. Many villas were built with a internal garage but have had it converted into another bedroom(s). These might be best suited to your needs.
Gas (fuel) is often cheaper away from the resorts so keep your eyes open for the best deal. Walmarts and K-marts are best for most grocery shopping and much more besides. Make sure the villa has a big fridge! Buy cool boxes for the car journeys and handy ones for the parks.
Parks....I don't know if you have been before but what we did was to leave it until after mid-day to go in. Many Brits go at sparrow's fart and are wrecked by 2 pm, but are determined to stay the whole day if it kills them (and be assured, if you are not careful in this heat, it can). Many give up and head out for a cheaper lunch so between 2-4 the parks thin out a bit, the best time to get smaller queues for the best rides. Always buy the ponchos for the rain - which is another thing. When it comes, it is torrential so get under cover as it usually comes with lightning, and most of the outdoor rides stop while it is on. Once it stops though it is dry again inside 15 minutes but the air will be very hot and steamy so be aware for anyone with chest complaints.
We used go to every other day to a park or attraction and have an easy day between - a 14-day pass on a 14-day holiday is not practical unless you are a masochist, or you have a death wish. There is plenty to do and shopping is a good alternative to trogging around the parks just to use up your days. Buy passes only for what you can do. There is always next year.
Areas like I-Drive and Kissimmee are well policed but still remain wary in open areas like parking lots at night. Some parts of Downtown Orlando are not safe at night, like most cities it just calls for a bit of common sense.
That is just scratching the surface but if there is anything specific, let me know. A good guide book is the 'Brit's Guide to Disney World and Orlando'.
