Police swooped on a car in a seaside town and seized 50 high-powered stun guns which were disguised as mobile phones.

Officers searched a red Audi in Paignton, Devon, at 4.45pm on Monday and found the weapons stuffed into a holdall.

It is thought the weapons may have been imported from mainland Europe to be sold on the black market in the UK.

The weapons, which are illegal to own, were disguised as silver mobile handsets which would enable criminals to carry them.

They emit a potentially lethal charge from the top of the mobile phone, which is activated by pressing the keypad.

Devon and Cornwall police yesterday said they were testing the haul of weapons to make sure they are genuine and to see how powerful they are.

A small amount of cannabis was also found.

A 44-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, both from Paignton, were arrested at the scene.

The teenager was later released without charge and the man released on police bail until August 10.

They're stun-guns not Tasers as per the topic title.

Tasers discharge from a distance, stun-guns you have to be up-close and personal.

Actually, Taser is just a brand name of Taser International and is used for a variety of their products.

You can drive-stun with a Taser too, you don't need to fire the barbs.

Yes. I seem to remember the term "aggressively drive into the assailant" being used.

It's a common misconception that a stun-gun is a Taser.
