Can you take part in police cadets if you are in full time education (I.E. sesions only on at the weekend/afterschool)?
Also, do members of South Yorkshire Cadets recieve I.D. Cards?
Thanks,

Hi mate..
When I went to college there was a lad who was in the police cadets who did it on a weekend and evening of a weekday..
Do yes it's do-able.. However you don't get an ID card as far as I'm aware..
Ironically I got the in police and he didn't.. So it makes you wonder whether the police cadets has any impact at all on an application into the actual police.

In terms of Essex you join up once you have left education. I can't see however Essex getting any more cadets for a few good years. And even then I don't think they will ever be the same again IF they did come back.
It is possible and good luck to you.
The Police Cadets (like other youth organisations such as St John Ambulance, Army Navy Air Force Cadets etc) is a fantastic way of involving young people to make something of themselves.
These organisations are also helpful in obtaining full time regular adult recruits in the future.
As to whether or not membership of police cadets helps you into the police that all depends on the economic and jobs situation at the time.
When times are good the police have traditionally had problems recruiting as good quality candidates have taken other jobs.
In times of recession the police have no problems recruiting and the cadets can suffer as a consequence of cutbacks.

In the Telford Volunteer Police Cadets (West Mercia Police) the scheme is aged between 16-18 year olds, (i.e. those who've left school) However our sessions are held weekly at the Divisional Headquarters from 18:30 until 21:00. We also have a variety of Policing Duties which we undertake with Officers, which is entirely optional, so if you can't make it due to other committments then they're very flexible and try to work around you.
As for I.D. Cards, we get issued with an I.D. Card with a plastic holder and the Force lanyard...sadly, no wallet or badge! :'(
Hope this helps!
Best Wishes,
Nicholas W. Borrett

The ID card really shouldnt be the thign that makes it or breaks it for you. Your best bet would be to speak to the cadet team at SY and ask them what sort of things you will be expected to do and what cadets get up to. It is more about learning, the experience you get from it and such like rather than getting some form of ID card.

Probably to show off to the pals!

Yes, I know that completely.
I will probably speak to them later about what to expect, but getting an ID card or not won't make a difference as to if I join.

Is being a cadet considered "cool" these days?

I know it might be suspicious at first, but I had already answered their question.
I will contact my local cadets when I want to definitely join. Thanks for everyone's replies.

I understand why they are suspisious of someone asking if you get an ID card.
I think this has ultimately been answered, you would be better ringing your local cadet supervisor and asking them what it entails.
