Hi Everyone,

Is anyone here in the OSU and wouldn't mind me asking a few questions.

I'm starting my training in June and have chosen to join Hendon OSU and wouldn't mind speaking to someone whos actually experienced it first hand.

Thanks

Luke

Heya Jay,

You can get a little more info on OSU here; Met police careers site
Or if you do a quick search of the forum for "operational support unit" you should find a few threads about who they are and what they get up to. Posted Image

The OSU do a wide range of deployments most known for working in serials after a borough has requested there assistance with some specific problem bot in uniform and non uniform roes. Akin to a pan London tasking unit. They are at present the only MSC Shield trained unit and put officers onto Commissioners Reserve. They work on a hard roster, which although there can be individual flexibility around working times, expect to do Friday on, Weekend off, Saturday On, Weekend off, etc.

Thanks for the the links WAID, I'm interested in reading up more on OSU too, just a bit of a struggle wading through the less relevant posts.

They do do deployments mid week, often for slower time IPS competency building

Just think it will be easier with travel commitments until I get sorted out in London!
Like working friday, weekend off, working saturday etc, then I would wanna come onto borough!

by that point your choice of borough would be full... there's already only about 5 boroughs currently taking Specials!

Yeah exactly my thoughts.

This post or the above one is not questioning the OSU choice but just NewhamSC is joining my borough so I was shocked.

I seriously think you should keep KF mate. Our managers are super and will support and understand any limitations you may have pre-moving to London.

Don't know who gave you -1 but I will make it right, yeah I was excited about hitting KF, but I haven't heard nothing from them what so ever, the only person to contact me was the special sergeant on here, other than that no one has emailed me or contacted me about it, and everyone else on my course has had loads of information some have even had their shoulder numbers etc! So i'm stuck in two minds really as to what to do, as OSU is something I think I would be good at, but I want to have the freedom a borough gives in order to get my IPS as quickly as possible!

They normally only contact you after your course is over - ie, when you've passed all the exams. That's probably why you haven't heard yet. They are very helpful as Ben says and you can give them a call and speak to them if you want.
