Here is another of those 'tidying up' topics. This one is for discussing everything and anything to do with the uniform and equipment for Hertfordshire Constabulary.

This includes things such as kit recommendations, what we are issued with etc.

Once again any posts relating to this subject found posted elsewhere will be merged into this topic.

Ok then, as far as boots are concerned:

1. I understand Magnum patrol boots are issued, is there an alternative on offer though such as a higher leg boot (eg magnum classic)
2. I assume steel toe caps/composite toes are frowned upon, or is it a personal choice?

I don't think these questions have been answered specifically in the Herts forum!

EDIT: typing too fast again

I understood there is a choice of two?
I purchased my own SWAT (ladies) boots with composite toe which are detector safe!
Only as I heard the issued boots aren't the most comfortable!

I must say, I have not had any problems at all with the force issue Magnum boots, I have found them very comfortable.

There are two versions available, ankle and high-leg.

Thats what I was after, I would prefer high leg as they should give more support to the ankle.

I wear magnums with steel toes at work (employer issued) I find them very comfortable to be honest, they fit perfectly straight out of the box with no blisters.

However some people do have issues with them I believe.

I would suggest anyone considering non force issue boots with toecaps take supervisory advice before buying and wearing them on duty.

Makes sense, apart from anything else it will cover yourself!

I love my Magnum issue boots!! Very very comfortable and supportive too.

Again, get some advice on personal issue boots! Although buying your own is fine, you might want to find out whats what with regards to the toe!

What would be a potential problem with toe caps composite or steel?

What I was told was that if you were to have a car run over your foot (for example) the steel toe cap would clamp down and cleanly sever the end of your foot off.

Just for info,
When we started RPU shifts we were issued with Steel Toe cap boots, purely for RPU only and the reason was the opposite of yours in that they offer protection if
a car should drive over your foot !
We were however forbidden to use these boots for PO.

But is there actually a policy regarding this in Hertfordshire?

It's all a bit odd really. The best bet would be to get in touch with OHU (possibly). Then they could most likely give you a solid answer.

Maybe... :)

At uniform fitting do you try on trousers and tops?

Yep, they normally measure you but also get you to test the fit as well, your previously mentioned boots will be fine as well.

That's good they are very comfy and easy with the zip on the side! Plus they were £85 so I would be gutted if I couldn't wear them!

Right then, had a random thought today regarding sunglasses. Should we get to have a bright sunny summer this year, what is the policy on the wearing of these on duty?

If you need to wear them for a valid reason, ie driving, then that is absolutely fine, if it is more I want to look cool then you'll get told off, also remember if you are wearing them if you do have to deal with a member of public to take them off before starting to deal with the incident

That's what I was thinking of in all honesty, that being said does the brim of the custodian/cap adequately shield your eyes from the sun if it is brighter than usual?

Hat? What hat?

Mine hasn't left my kit bag yet

I wear my sunglasses :) Wore them when out on the bike at the weekend and when out in the car too, but as above - take them off when dealing with people :aok:
