Specials Task Force

(See full story below at the end)
This is just an idea but I thought this type of situation would be lend itself to having a small group of Specials able to help out with specific policing needs whilst unrestricted by geographical location. I think that Sussex Police misses a trick sometimes when they could flood an area with FREE resources with one specific goal ie catching someone committing street robberies.
I am sure that there are enough Specials with IP, skills and time that would be able (and very willing) to help out in these circumstances and keen to get a positive result, if not only by a show of extra resources to the public. There seem to have been several recent cases of robbery, sexual assault, arson etc that are high profile and maybe ideally suited to additional resources being provided by Specials. We are a free untapped resource, unrestricted by hours and goal driven. We can provide bodies at short notice without requiring additional funding for overtime and can be self managed, plus if we catch the people responsible what better way to promote a positive image to the public.
It's just an idea but can only see that it benefits everyone (except any people we catch!).
BBC News Story
Police are linking a knifepoint robbery to four other street attacks in Brighton in less than a week.
Sussex Police said a 58-year-old woman was threatened with a knife and had her purse stolen in Hove Park Villas at about 1830 GMT on Tuesday.
Officers believe the same person could be responsible for four other muggings in the city between 20 and 23 January.
The force has urged residents to be extra vigilant and to avoid putting themselves in danger.
Det Insp Ian Still said: "We believe last night's robbery is connected to four recent street robberies in the Brighton and Hove area.
"Patrols have been increased in the area and we would advise people to please be vigilant and if approached by the offender to not put themselves in any danger by refusing to hand over their belongings and try to call 999 as soon as they can."
The first robbery took place in New England Street on Thursday, with two further thefts the following evening in St Nicholas Road, and a fourth on Sunday in Pelham Street.
Sussex Police said the man in all the incidents carried a knife, and was described as tall and slim. The victims had cash and mobile phones stolen.

We dont get access to CIMS however we spend most of our time in plain clothes over most of Sussex. I totally understand that we arent full time officiers but theres nothing more degrading than being told "you dont need to see this as you cant do it".
The first night with Sussex Police we were visited by the CC his speech seems worlds apart to the reality of practical policing.

Why not tap it into a group of willing and able volunteers who are capable, after all the public dont care whetehr your an SC or a PC, all they see is a uniform.
on a random point they showed an SC on Brit cops last night which i thought was good poblicity. Why dont the bben or another channel make a documentary show (like brit cops, road wars etc) that focuses on the work of the special constabulary. perhaps it could show them on duty and at their normal jobs to compare how SC's get a good work/duty/social life balance

Although i think flooding specials to an area that needs focus in terms of more officers or public re-assurance would be a brilliant idea. PSU would be awesome too!

I have to agree with all the above posts. This original post should have been emailed to someone at HQ, maybe the chief constable or ACC M. I would be willing to help out anywhere across the county, and im sure the divisons/departments affected would greatly appreciate the help as well as the public reassusrance.

Hi all,
Not been on here for ages, so only just read this...
I'm bringing this up with ACC M as part of the Specials review. The RPU Ops team is tasked in this way at force TTCG. Hopefully he will see how useful this could be, and how cost effective it would be for the division that needed help.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers.
