Just thought i'd post this issue here and see what people think of the new procedure for new recruits within Kent Police.

When someone now joins Kent Police (meaning the intake of 2005 due to recruitment freezes) they will still do the initial training at maidstone, which I believe is approx 12 weeks. Upon completion of this and upon commence of their two years probation, Police Officers will spend their first year at Canterbury Christ Church University College doing something like a HND in Policing, which is part of the new national police qualification.
This time at the university will be taught by tutors, police officers etc and will also include placements with various organisations as well as with the police.
Upon completion of the first year and the qualification, PCs will then be attached to their stations....

In reality... although there will be placements in the 1st year at police stations, PCs will not go out on full time patrol untill their second year.....

Sounds like quite a good idea really..... You also get paid about $1200 as well a month... so....

Anyway... It will be interesting to hear people's view upon this new structure. ..

Apologise if this explanation isnt that accurate..

Regards..

 sigh, the thought of studying again does not go down well!
i agree that you should be patroling whilst at uni, and to be honest, the police is the police, the job is the same nationwide if not world wide so why is the police reruitment different in every county??
but i suppose doing the uni thing will prove that little bit more that you realy want the job, its just a bum to study again after just having left college

;) Well it does sound like a good idea and gives police officers a qualification to fall back on which is great. Have spoken to several police officers in the Met and Kent re this and a Mixture of responce as I am sure you can imagin. I think the most common complaint re this is the 'getting out there and policing' and the frustration of not being able to !

All in all I say YES good and happy to see a good sound footing in the first stage of being a police officer.

All I'd say is that it would make more sense to do it over the 2 years of your probation so that you can do it whilst experiencing the job first hand aswell.

sounds pants to me :) why is this country so hung up on academic qualifications!? does this mean if you cant write a 3000 word essay in 3 hours then you arent suitable as a police officer!

Madness, absolute madness. I can only think its a cunning way of reducing inexperienced officers on the streets by letting the ones that are already out there learn first to stop 'the blind leading the blind'

;) when the time comes I can feel another force calling me and Im sure Kent police will lose a great number of potential officers because of this, which is very sad.

just my opinion!

I understand what you mean Scoop - I get annoyed by how they think an exam is an accurate reflection of the real world.

And whilst it's a good way to go "yes our force numbers are up .... *whispers* but 5% are at university" I think in some ways it should be seen as a positive thing, as it increases the theoretical training of those new officers (like I've said already, you can only learn so much at uni about policing and therefore should do duties as well as the uni) and also provides them with a qualification should the time arise where that officer wishes to leave the force and find other employment.
