Driving: First Learn your highway code second go in uniform and take your PPE you will not need to wear it but as your on Duty if something major happened then yes you will need your PPE.
Ensure you have your waterproof coat or your light weight coat with you incase you come across any RTC etc.
You need to take your Driving Licence I.D and paper part with you.
Eye Test as well .
Oh and dont be late
You will enjoy it depending on how many others are on the same course depends on how long it takes.
I hope this helps.

mention any other vehicle types you've driven, you may get some extra catagories added to your entitlement.

Without doing a check drive like everyone else has to? Ooh I think I'll go back and ask for my motorcycle entitlement to be added.

it was one of those 'pull up a sandbag' moments...
Tales of mountain climbing in 40 tonne artics and the delights of the Rome ring-road in rush hour got me a tick box for PSU carriers as well!
Should have told him about my helicopter missions in Nam!!!!

Congrats.
The DTU at Ferndown are pretty maxed out trying to meet the needs of the force and although they have their training schedule planned 18months in advance they have been very good at getting about 5 sessions of Day 1 and a couple of Day 2 fitted in so far this year. It wasn't that long ago when it was only 2 Day1 sessions a year and Day 2 wasn't an option.

I am hoping to get a course booked soon as coming to the end of my probation. What do we get to drive, just the cars or the small VW PSU vans too?
What you get to drive depends on what entitlement is on your Driving licence. Whether you have to take another course to drive other vehicles also depends on what previous driving experience you have. For example; If you DL says you can drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, but you've never driven anything larger than a ford fiesta, they are not going to let you loose in a large PSU van without first demonstrating you can handle the size and characteristics of that vehicle.
As you wil learn when you do your driving course, driving a police vehicle is a huge responsibility. Personally, I quite enjoy being a passenger.
One other thing, driver training is usually over-subcribed with regulars, the basic driving courses for Specials only crop up very infrequently, and when they do, they are at VERY short notice.

Whilst this may have happened for a few individuals in the past it should not be happening again. You should only get to drive vehicles in the same 'group' what you have done a check drive in, the only exception being that you may do your basic ticket and stop courses in a DTU pursuit training car but will not be authorised to drive it after the check drive.

I see, personally I am used to driving 3.5 tonnes as I have moved house more times than I have fingers to count them. Regards to drive checks is this on a request basis? So say if someone passed a basic course. I presume that in order for them to drive other fleet vechiles they would need to have a drive check completed?

Is the driving test practical just like the original test and how long is the theory?
Cheers.
