 hi guys. i am finishing a public services course in 7 weeks at college. after that i hope to do some kind of work experience for around 2 weeks with kent police. but im only 17, and i woul realy like to be "on the front line" out with the police and the public walking the beat getting a feel for the job before i apply. woul they let me do this or would i be confined to the station?
i personaly know a few coppers would they be able to "pull a few strings" and let me patrol with them?
i would much appretiate it for any info on this
cheers all u kent guys n girls
Redmist ;)

Hi Redmist
I did work experience with Kent police in year 11 at school. I just wrote to the station explaining that i wanted to do a week with them and as i was 16, i managed to get a place. I know they definately dont take anyone under 16 but as u state ure 17 then that shouldnt be a problem. I really enjoyed it, spent 4 out of the 5 days out with the regulars going to flash calls etc and 1 day on foot patrol in the town centre.
Although i do remember being told that they dont as a rule do work experience( think it was something to do with insurance reasons) anymore. You may aswell give it a go though. My work experience was almost 4 years ago now so things might of all changed.
Sorry i cant help you anymore
Good luck
Zoe

Hi Redmist
I have done (and still do) loads of work experience with the Metropolitan police, reacently i was informed that all police forces stopped allowing civilians in the police vehicles due to the increase in POLLACC'S (Police accidents) which left me walking on foot patrol and occasonally in a panda car (not as fun as an IRV) but it still gets you experience. Whether this has taken effect in kent i don't know, but even if it is walking, its still worth doing.

Hi there Redmist,

Took someone out for a duty recently which is great enjoy doing it.

SADLY I have now been advised that Kent Police policy is NOW such that only applicants for the role of police officer can come out on duty an they must be well into the application stage. I would strongly advise you to :

Ring Kent police on tel: 01622 690 690 ask to speak to the seargents office in whatever area you live / wish to go on duty they may be able to help you.

Remember alway take the name of who you speak to.

Goof luck

Jon

Yes Nick I know I think it is a great opportunity for anyone and some great fun.

I had a Sgt. jump down my throat re this issue but had an Insp. tell me it was ok!!!

Sadly I have found out that the KENT POLICE FORCE POLICY is as I previously stated. But if you want to come and have a look at a police stn see the cells etc let me know and might be able to sort something out.

This is sadly true...

They don't let you do it until you have passed your PIRT, that was certainly the case last year anyhow.

thankyou all for your posts. i rang the recruitment department and they said you have to have applied for the job, just like some of you were saying.
the thing is...
i spoke to a PC in my local town (i know her personaly) and she said i might be able to "shadow someone" i know 2 police officers personaly who work in area3 i thought maybe if i ask them they will let me shadow them or they could pull a few strings or something, or would this be very hard to do?
