applied to be a pcso in october 09 passed various stages and been waiting for vetting and reference checks since december. Just wondering whether anyone knows how long this usually takes. thanks
My friend is also under vetting for the PCSO positions recently advertised. She is a serving special and knows how long this process can take. It's not much help to you but being honest, it takes as long as it takes

Vetting varies from candidate to candidate but it would normally take around 3-6 weeks. When recruiting large numbers of officers, staff etc it often increases to around 6-8 weeks. The Financial checks sometimes also make the process longer!
Great thanks for the reply. do you know when the start dates will be? also I have noticed that SWP have changed the website and on the PCSO section it now says that there is a fitness test after the vetting, is this correct?
Thanks

Wernt to clear on the phone about dates but looks like early summer ish! Not as early as I'd hoped but still good news!

4 years? That's a long time! No I don't think they were contacted they told me that the next thing I'd hear was when they sent me my start date and contacted my employer! Which sounds good! I'm sure yours won't take long when did you do your medical? Hopefully it will be soon I'm getting excited now!thats awsum news well done mate, i phoned hr 2day my vetting is still on going which i'm gutted about, especially after hearing your gr8 news, i was told that march intake is now full from applicants who applied in 2006?!Hope i don't have 2 wait 4 years 2 join the force!

I had my medical on the 12th Jan, so did they give you a specific date for the intake in the summer? The person in hr mentioned funding issues, resulting in people being held back?I had my hopes up for end of march, never mind!

as stated before, everyone's circumstances are different, so timescales will vary accordingly. On a personal level my vetting approval, was the slowest part of the whole recruitment process. Be patient it'll be worth it. I know what you're going through. Best of luck though!!

Nope, you have to purchase your own footwear. The only people in the force who get footwear from stores are those in the PSU serials. Specials, PCs and PCSOs have to buy your own. There used to be boot allowance for SCs but at least in my BCU this was finished over 2 yrs ago.
that's great thanks very much for the reply!
Can you recommend any boots?
Cheers

Btw quick question about eyesight guys, I've read on the south wales police website that:
New recruits must have at least 6/12 vision in their right or left eye, or at least 6/6 vision in both eyes.
Those who wear glasses, spectacles or contact lenses must have at least 6/36 vision in both eyes without wearing their glasses, spectacles or contact lenses.
And somewhere else I read that you have to have 6/12 in both eyes. Is it 6/12 in each eye or either eye?
I can just about manage and mumble my way throught 6/12 with just my left eye and yet I have pretty much 20 20 vision in my right. All advice would be welcomed
Cheers guys, look forward to seeing you on the beat in 1000 years time! haha

Hi,In case you haven't already got the info folks, no fitness test for applicants to this force (South Wales). The national process does involve a fitness test but SWP do not require that element to be undertaken as part of their assessment process.

you can all breathe a big sigh of relief now!!!!!
that's great thanks for info! Has anybody else here'd anything?

I'm going to email hr to find out if they have a ballpark figure of a start date, they must be really busy at the moment but I think any info would be good! Hang in there will let you know if I hear anything!Just to let you know that i received a letter saying that my application is on hold because they are still awaiting confirmation from their chief Officers in relation to future intakes.
Cheers
