Now the Immigration & Customs wings have merged (at border controls at least) - could someone explain the new rank structure and how this is portrayed on the rank slides worn by officers? I've looked on t'interweb but had no luck so far!
Hi, with the recent merger between HMRC and the Immigration service the grade system is a little complex at the moment but I'll try to expalin it as best I can, I came from the ex immigration side so if any former HMRC officers wish to correct me please feel free. Basically we have four uniformed grades who excercise legal powers and have a power of arrest under PACE or detention under the Immigration Act, not all staff are fully cross trained and authorised to exercise both customs and immgration powers although the cross training is being rolled out. The four main grades are:
1) Assistant Immigration Officer/ Assistant Officer (former HMRC) 1 bar
2)Immigration Officer/Officer 2 bars
3)Chief Immigration Officer/Higher Officer 2 and a half bars
4)Inspector/Senior Officer 3 bars
These are the staff you will see working at ports above this are director and senior civil service grades who will have 4 or more bars, we also have warranted staff who wear plain clothes or PPE only both at ports and inland, although I'm not 100% sure i don't think inland staff wear unifrom at all, just PPE for operations, any enforcment staff please feel free to correct me. Hope this helps.

Inland enforcement teams wear full uniform at all times during enforcement actions. Uniform is not worn during pastoral roles. Which port do you work from?
UKBA Badged navy T-shirt/shirt or jumper. Navy Combats/dress pants. Black boots, belt etc. Epaulettes and of course full PPE.
BTW grades higher than HMI have uniforms. They are formal port style uniforms with stipes augmented by stars.

Its all in the process of being changed and new titles being rolled out, however not sure of the time frame.
AIO will change to ABO - Assistant Border Officer
IO will change to BO - Border Officer
I cant remember what the new CIO title will be.
3)Chief Immigration Officer/Higher Officer 2 and a half bars
4)Inspector/Senior Officer 3 bars
CIO/HO - 3 thin strips
HMI/SO - 3 thick stripes

BO? First I've heard of anything like this. I'd rather be an IO than a BO !

I dont think they thought that one through enough really!
I know its going to be rolled out first at the flagship ports such as Coquelles, Gatwick etc where dual training is taking place. It was quite a while ago I read the email though so anything in that time can change!

And that's not an armament on her bow. It's a 2,000-litre per minute fire fighting system.
